The flight took place on January 28, 2025, conducted by the 550th Helicopter Squadron at Malmstrom Air Force Base. The primary objective was to assess the aircraft’s ability to protect intercontinental ballistic missile convoy operations, ensuring its effectiveness in nuclear security.
According to Lieutenant Colonel Douglas Lincoln, director of testing at the U.S. Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center, this flight was the first of a total of 37 scheduled tests. Lincoln emphasized that integrating the MH-139 into nuclear security operations is a key step, focusing on evaluating its communication capabilities with ground forces.
Designed to replace the aging UH-1N Huey, which has been in service since the Vietnam era, the MH-139 Grey Wolf boasts significant improvements in speed, payload capacity, and durability. With this upgrade, the U.S. Air Force expects to enhance nuclear security, reduce response times, and increase the efficiency of Tactical Response Force teams.
